The St. Johns River serves as a vital artery for exploration and relaxation in this neck of the woods, with some of the world’s most enchanting freshwater springs, including DeLeon Springs and Blue Spring. With pristine waterways dotting the area, West Volusia becomes an ideal spot for unwinding and enjoying family-friendly outings. Gear up for an adventure where every splash enhances a story, and every swim is the icing on top. Here are some ideas for journeying through Florida’s stunning aquatic landscapes.
Fill up on pancakes, then go for a dip.
DeLeon Springs State Park is in a league of its own. Shining as a highlight of Old Florida, the Old Sugar Mill Pancake House invites visitors into its 100-year-old replica of the original 1830s sugar mill. Visitors can cook their own pancakes on griddles right on the table while enjoying the beautiful scenery of the surrounding spring and St. Johns River. On the water, the usual fare of kayaks and canoes is available for rent, with river cruises available to take passengers on a 50-minute ride through the State Park and nearby Lake Woodruff National Wildlife Refuge. Swimmers are in for a treat, with the swimming area remaining at 72 degrees year-round, and depths range from 18 inches to 30 feet at the spring boil.
Rediscover History at Green Springs
Green Springs Park in Enterprise, Florida, is named after the natural spring, which has a green hue due to high sulfur levels. In the 1800s, affluent tourists flocked to these springs, captivated by their purported healing properties. This influx of visitors spurred the demand for and development of hotels and spas, with the renowned Brock House Hotel standing as a prominent example in the area. Although the hotel has since vanished, the nearby Enterprise Museum now houses a collection of artifacts that offer valuable insights into its history. Today, the park seamlessly integrates into the region’s extensive network of multi-purpose and hiking trails, serving as a trailhead.
Tube Down the Spring Run at Blue Spring State Park
While Blue Spring State Park serves as the winter home to hundreds of manatees, for the rest of the year, it’s home to only a few, leaving ample room for hundreds of people. The constant 72-degree, crystal-clear spring water offers a perfect escape from the beating sun on a hot day. Whether you’re tubing, paddleboarding, canoeing, snorkeling, or enjoying a good old-fashioned swim, there’s plenty of water for everyone. Equipment is available for rent at the park.
